In Thane, India, Eight
people have been killed and 10 injured because of the building collapsing incident in Thane district of Maharashtra. Rescue operations were on Wednesday more than 12 hours after the collapse. Five people are still buried in the debris, according to the police. Around 20 people have been rescued but heavy downpour have made the rescue operation difficult. “Eight bodies have been pulled out from the debris. The 10 people, who are severely injured, have been taken to hospitals. It is suspected that five people are still trapped in the debris," said Sanjay Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police, Kalyan. Fifty personnel from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), two teams from Mumbai fire brigade and four teams from the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)are carrying out the rescue work.

The building was declared unsafe two years ago, said KDMC ward officer Vinayak Pandey. “Several notices, the last one in May, had been sent to the residents to vacate the building but the families had refused to move out.” The three storeyed building had collapsed on Tuesday night following heavy downpour at Thakurli in Thane district. Residents said 15 families lived in the building, some of whom were evacuated before the building came down.
